T.W. Hall Offers Over a Quarter-Century of Experience

Working for the University of Alaska in 1980, Dwan Hall saw an opportunity in the snow removal business so he bought a snowplow. Today, the combination sweeping and plowing business has assets worth over $1 million.

Cathy and Dwan Hall T. W. Hall was started in 1980 by Dwan and Cathy Hall to fill the plowing needs of the Juneau, Alaska, community. The company's first plow was a 1976 F250 4x4 with an 8' blade. The machine lasted 15 years.

Two years later, Dwan quit working for the University of Alaska to go at the business full-time. Immediately, he expanded by purchasing the company's first dump truck. Then, that fall, they grew again through purchase of a model 975 bobcat to help clear, stack and remove snow for their now numerous contracts.

In the fall of 1984 they bought the town's first sand application machine, which was mounted on the 1976 plow. That made the company the first in Juneau to offer a sanding option for their customers. Another truck, another plow, another sander and the story goes on.

The couple entered the sweeping industry when they realized that sweeping would be a good diversification to keep the company busy during Southeast Alaska's brief summer months. Their first machine was an Elgin Pelican. Today, the fleet includes the Pelican, as well as an Elgin AirCub and a new Victory Mark II.

"We have grown from a simple one-truck plow operation worth $4000 to a small sweeping and construction company with assets worth over 1 million dollars," said Dwan. "Our thanks to the great people of Juneau, who have provided us with the opportunity to be a part of the business community here for almost 30 years."

For the last three years Dwan has also been involved behind the scenes with the WorldSweeper.com Discussion Forum. He has not only been a central moderator at the site, but also chief 'spam-fighter' for the robot spamming that goes along with these types of forums. Dwan has been the first line of defense in removing unwanted posts on the Forum, as well as deleting the 'bad guys' that find a way to perform robo-signup and posting at the site.

As you will hear in the audio interview, Hall credits his company's growth with diversification, something necessary for growth in a relatively small marketplace such as Juneau. This is made more critical than usual because of the weather conditions and short summers of Alaska; in Juneau, for example, it rains an average of 277 days a year.
